Hockey timekeeping: prepare for your first shift
A free volunteer guide to checking the game clock, choosing the right controller and practising before a minor hockey game.
Before the game
Confirm period lengths and the applicable rules with your league contact. Arrive early enough to check the equipment with arena staff.
Choose the right controller
Check the model in person. Select your arena in the simulator, or choose the machine model directly. Arena information may be dated; the equipment at the rink is the final check.
Practise the clock
Try setting the time and period, starting and stopping the clock, and correcting a score and a penalty. Follow the model guide: keys and entry sequences vary by controller.
During the game
Keep your attention on the officials. Follow their signals to start or stop the clock and confirm details before entering a penalty.
Prepare a substitute
A manager can arrange volunteer duties and substitute requests in HockeyTimekeeper. Share the controller model link with your substitute.
Practise a controller
Model manuals and training videos are linked inside the simulator.
